Dean Castle, Kilmarnock
Dean Castle, in the Ayrshire town of Kilmarnock, takes its name from the ‘dean’ or wooded valley in which it sits. It was originally owned by the Boyd family to whom Robert the Bruce gave the estate as a reward for their loyalty. I lived for some years at the edge of the Dean Castle Country Park, enjoying the pleasure of walking in the woods there in every season. In October the mellow colours of the stonework are echoed in the beauty of the fading leaves. The winter sun shows the castle in a different light, glinting off the small windows; a light covering of snow brings the edges of stonework into relief and lies lightly on the evergreen shrubs.
