The Jougs, Kilmaurs

Kilmaurs was established as a burgh in 1527 by the Earl of Glencairn. As the new burgh grew, this tolbooth came to lie at its centre; it served as the meeting place for local worthies and the magistrate, as a collection point for customs dues, and as a place of punishment for wrongdoers. The tolbooth came to be known as the Jougs after the iron neck ring and chain which is attached to the external wall near the tower steps.

For some days I had looked out in passing for the sun to show this local icon at its best. On a typical Ayrshire day, the sun broke through after a heavy shower of rain, lighting up the white painted walls of the Jougs: steam rose from the still wet street and, right on cue, the children came out to play.
